Birding for Connection
The Relational Birding Method
Enjoy stories about how practicing the Relational Birding Method has resulted in the author’s satisfying encounters with an angry goshawk, a majestic great gray owl, a peaceful porcupine, a family of inquisitive river otters, and more!
We are all connected; and yet, many of us have never felt more isolated than ever before. Relational birding is a method of engagement with nature’s community which can help turn the tide, bringing us out of isolation and into a kind of connection which cultivates empathy for birds, their environments, and the other humans with whom we share the experience.
This book conveys the Relational Birding Method. Plus, you’ll find Relational Birding Challenges at the end of each chapter.

Woodpecker Oneness Curriculum
This book invites an awareness of woodpeckers as expressions of the wonder and enchantment of our forests. Designed for young people ages 7-12. The workbook-format curriculum includes guided interactive learning exercises about woodpecker adaptations, communication, habitat, and foraging strategies. Participants will learn how to identify different species of woodpeckers and wood-dwelling insects from the marks left in the bark and wood of trees. Chapters are also included on the topics of photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient exchange in the woodpecker's forest ecosystem. In addition, there are introductory how-to chapters about sketching and writing a poem about woodpeckers and their forest homes. The capstone project involves exploring ways to help create habitat for woodpeckers. In the back of the workbook you'll find a field guide for the woodpeckers of eastern North America with photographs as well as information about habitat and food preferences for each species.

Wondrous Woodpeckers: A book of poems
For as long as I’ve been birding, I’ve found woodpeckers to be among the most inspiring of feathered neighbors. I think it’s because of the way that a forest of trees sparks my sense of wonder, and no animal is so inextricably connected with trees as a woodpecker; for food, nesting, sleeping, resting, and communication. When something inspires me, my natural response is to write about it. Writing is how I process life’s experiences in such a way that I open myself to being changed by them. This is how I trod the way of authenticity, of growth, and of personal transformation. In short, this is a book of poems that I wrote for myself. I share it with the world revealing something of my own path and perspective. If something that I’ve written here strikes a chord in you, I sincerely hope that we’ll get to share the trail at some point in life’s enchanted journey.
There is a woodpecker,
Securely clinging,
Comfortably braced,
Holding home,
Yet free to roam where capable wings may carry.

At Home in Wild Places
Exploring the Art of Sauntering
Sauntering is a way of being and moving about in wild places through which a person recognizes the land as holy and discovers themselves as part of it. In the wild places they frequented, American Nature Writers Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Enos Mills, Edward Abbey, and Jane Goodall encountered mystery, connection to something bigger than themselves, peace they could not fully articulate, and experiences that transformed them. This book presents their sauntering methods in an organized fashion so that hikers, adventurers, birders, and other outdoor enthusiasts of every kind who are hungry for deeper connection with nature can, with greater regularity, discover themselves as part and parcel of nature.

The Call of the Raven
Have you felt stuck in the busyness of life? Have you heard the call of the raven as she flies over town beckoning us to follow? They say the raven is among the most intelligent of birds. I believe it, because the raven knows the wisdom of wild spaces perhaps better than most. It feels to me like this book wrote itself because I chose to follow. The raven led me to The Pine Creek Gorge time and again during my five years living in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania (2015-2020). The Pine Creek Gorge seems to me to be one of the most ecologically interesting places in the Pennsylvania landscape. In this book you'll find a collection of my stories of self-discovery, wild community, and inspiration. I hope the essays in this book will enrich your next visit to the Pine Creek Gorge and help you grow deeper into community with wild spaces everywhere.
