Gray Squirrel's Looted Treasure

The stories I've heard about pirates and outlaws lead me to believe that buried treasure is meant to be found. I think Tufted Titmouse would agree.

While taking a walk at Roundtop Park I noticed Tufted Titmouse hopping about on the snow. Tufted Titmouse had found a bright yellow seed buried under the snow and flew away with it in beak. I went over for a closer look. What I found was Gray Squirrel's buried treasure; a dozen or so bright yellow corn kernels that were once buried, but now in the process of being looted by that little treasure hunter, Tufted Titmouse.

Here is a play-by-play of the third time I watched Titmouse return to the same location. I did not see the usual flock of other titmice, chickadees, and nuthatches that would typically accompany such a bird. I wondered if Tufted Titmouse sneaked off from the others so as not to have to share this buried treasure...

Having stashed or eaten a kernel, Tufted Titmouse is back for another...

Here is Gray Squirrel's buried treasure, discovered and stolen by crafty Tufted Titmouse...

This looks like a good one...

Off goes Tufted Titmouse to a secret location with one of Gray Squirrel's golden nuggets...

Okay, maybe a not so secret location...

It looks like Tufted Titmouse is lodging Gray Squirrel's golden nugget in the bark of that tree...

Circled in this photo is Gray Squirrel's golden nugget. Or is it now Tufted Titmouse's golden nugget? Let's hope they don't bump into each other. Things could get ugly...

The golden nugget lodged in the tree is circled in this photo too. It looks like Tufted Titmouse plans on coming back for it later...

Tufted Titmouse is back, looking for another golden nugget to steal!

By my count that makes at least four less golden nuggets for Gray Squirrel's buried treasure.

The saga of Gray Squirrel and Tufted Titmouse remind us that treasure once buried is meant to be found, and all that is secret will one day be revealed.
