The Joy in Service

Always quick to extend a smile and a kind greeting, if he is not cleaning or maintaining something at one of the local businesses along Main Street, he's doing what he can to make this world a better place for the people and the animals of Wellsboro. The birds love him (he feeds them!), and the dogs love him too (he knows what kind of treats they like best!).

It is clear that my friend Mike has discovered something about what it means to live the best life possible. Every time I encounter Mike his kind-hearted and generous demeanor and willingness to help his neighbors makes me think of Jesus; faithful to give himself for the sake of others.

"You’ve got to enjoy life, and the best way for me to do that is to help others," says Mike. It is clear that he finds his greatest joy in helping others to thrive.

It occurs to me that with the background in public safety and emergency response that Mike has, that he could easily have "graduated" to what society might call a higher level position that would not require him to engage in such humble service, but he seems to love what he does. The joy that Mike finds in service to others, not because he has to, but because he wants to do his part to help others find the joy in life is a great example for the rest of us.

Thanks Mike.
